Betty Griffin Austin, 74, of Tifton (formerly of the Holt community in Irwin County) died Monday, January 12, 2009 at the Osceola Nursing Home.
Funeral services will be held 4 P.M., Wednesday, January 14 at Henderson Chapel Primitive Baptist Church with Elder Ed McIntyre officiating. Interment will follow the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7-9, Tuesday evening at the funeral home in Ocilla.
Mrs. Austin was born January 25, 1934, in Pierce County, Georgia to the late Claude W. and Sarah Jane Dyal Douglas. She graduated from Ambrose High School and moved to the Irwin Community in 1978 from Douglas. Mrs. Austin was a homemaker and a member of Henderson Chapel Primitive Baptist Church.
She is survived by her husband, Max E. Austin of Tifton; sons, John C. Griffin of Sandersville, Dave (Lucy) Griffin of Byron and Doug (Yvonne) Griffin of Ocilla; daughter, Deborah Ann (Joe) Traynham of Hanahan, SC; 12 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren; brothers, Larry Douglas and Marvin Douglas both of Douglas; sisters, Elizabeth Abdullah of Cocoa Beach, FL, Jean Justice of Forest Park, Hazel Vernon of Dallas and Linda Mobley of Manor; many nieces and nephews also survive. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, James Donald Griffin, son, Don Griffin, and 4 brothers.
