Obituary

Funeral service for Mr. William Perkins Freeman, age 89, of Clarksville will be on Saturday January 10, 2009 at 11 am at Neal-Tarpley Funeral Home Chapel with Steve Kirby officiating. Place of rest is in the Resthaven Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Dickson County High School Choral Department, 509 Henslee Drive, Dickson, TN. Services are under the direction of the Taylor Funeral Home, Dickson, TN and Neal-Tarpley Funeral Home, Clarksville, TN. Mr. Freeman, retired district manage of outh Central Bell with 41 years of service to the company, died Jan 6, 2009 at NHC of Dickson after a brief illness. He started with Bell digging holes and pole setting and worked himself up to management. A native of Sumner County, he was the last of 15 children born to the late William Perkins and Lucinda Bead Freeman. He attended David Lipscomb his freshman year, the next year he received a football scholarship to Cumberland University in Lebanon. Although he didn't make the team he waited on tables seven days a week for tuition, room and board. He was an advocate for education. In 1941, he volunteered for the U. S. Navy. Because of his experience with the phone company, he went to radio school. A year later, he was issued a rifle and sent to the South Pacific to set up radio equipment. At the end of the war, he was discharged in October 1945. Working with Bell, he and his family lived in various parts of the country. He was active in community affairs in Montgomery County, serving in the ROtary Club and was named with the highest honor as a Paul Harris Fellow, active in the CLarksville area Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of the Conservation Club, Assoc. of the United States Army, Montgomery County Sportmans Club. His service to APSU was long and Strong. He was a member of the Tower Club, Governors Club, APSU Foundation Board of Trustees and Presidents Circle of Advisors. He gave much of himself to APSU. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Priest Freeman. He attended the Church of CHrist. Survivors include his daughter, Cindy Freeman and her husband, Michael Meise of Dickson, TN; several nieces and nephews.
