Obituary

Mr. Noah R. Amaral, of this city died Sunday, January 4 in Morton Hospital following
a lengthy illness. He was the beloved husband of Marie (Bruso) Amaral. He was born
97 years ago in Taunton, the son of the late Manuel and Rose (Rodriques) Amaral.
Raised in Whittenton, he was educated in Taunton and had been a lifelong city resident.
Prior to his retirement, he had been employed as a watchman at Taunton Nursing Home
for 29 years. He had previously been employed at Reed and Barton Silversmiths for
several years and had also worked at the former Norton Box Shop. Mr. Amaral was a
decorated U.S. Army veteran of World War II, having served in the European-African-
MiddleEastern Theatre. He participated in the D-Day Invasion of Normandy and the
Rhineland Campaign as a member of the 79th (Cross of Lorraine) Infantry Division,
described by Germany as “one of the best attack divisions in the U.S. Army.” Mr. Amaral
participated in the surrender of Cherbourg in France, and the invasion of Germany across
the Rhine. He received the Purple Heart for wounds received in action, and was Honor-
ably Discharged from the 313th Infantry Regiment in October, 1945. He was a devout man who prayed daily and was well known for his many sayings. An avid fan of the
Boston Red Sox and greyhound racing, he especially enjoyed spending time with his many grandchildren. He was a communicant of the former St. Joseph’s Church in Taun-
ton.

Mr. Amaral was also the brother of the late Joseph Amaral, Demus Amaral, Jeromina
Duphily and Amelia Amaral.
Funeral services will be held from The Riendeau-Mulvey Funeral Home, 467 Bay Street,
on Wednesday, January 7 at 9:00 A.M. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow in St.
Andrew the Apostle Church, 261 Tremont Street, at 10:00 A.M. Interment, with Military
Honors will be in St. Joseph Cemetery. Relatives and friends are invited to attend.
Visiting Hours will be held on Tuesday, from 4:00 to 8:00 P.M.
