New Bedford, MA - Sophrona E. (Hathaway) Tavares, age 85 years, died December 27, 2008 , at St. Luke’s Hospital after a long illness. She was beloved widow of Virginio P. Tavares
She was the loved mother of Connie Uzzell, Angie Barros, Lou Ann Tavares and Warren Tavares all of New Bedford, Barbara Roza of Camden, ME. and Sonny husband of Maureen Tavares of FL. Sophrona was the sister of Barbara Hathaway of Medford, MA. She is also survived by 18 Grandchildren, 28 Great-Grandchildren and 4 Great-Great-Grandchildren, as well as several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Tavares was the daughter of the late Herbert W. and Irene (Vassal) Hathaway. She was born in Plymouth, MA. and has lived in this area all her life. She worked as an inspector at Aerovox, then as a nurse’s aid in Blaire House Nursing Home for 20 years, until her retirement.
Mrs. Tavares visiting hours will be Thursday at the Perry Funeral Home, 111 Dartmouth St. from 1 - 4 P.M. Relatives and friends are invited to attend.
