Rose M. (Martin) Fernandes, 93, of New Bedford died December 28, 2008 at St. Luke's Hospital after a long illness.
She was the wife of the late Manuel Fernandes.
Born in New Bedford, the daughter of the late John P. and Maria Rita (Neves) Martin, she lived in New Bedford all of her life.
Mrs. Fernandes was a parishioner of Our Lady of the Assumption Church.
She was a member of St. Martin dePorres Guild, Cape Verdean Veterans Auxiliary, St. John's Forever Young Club and the Cape Verdean Ultra Marine Band Club. She enjoyed crocheting and reading.
Survivors include 2 sons, Manuel "Jivey" Fernandes, Jr. and Leroy "Peanut" Fernandes, both of New Bedford; a daughter, Victoria "Queenie" Gebo of DeBary, FL; a sister, Helen Andrade of New Bedford; 7 grandchildren, Jeffrey Silva, Manuel Fernandes, III, Jean Silva, Ross Fernandes, June Wilkes, Dyan Violet and Doreen Santos; 16 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was the grandmother of the late Jan Marie Silva and Steven Paul Fernandes and the sister of the late Margaret Fortes, Pauline Veiga, Jennie Pina, Rita Stevens, Dorothy Barros, Alice Correia, May Rose, Joseph Senna, Edward Martin and Manuel Pinto.
Funeral from the Saunders-Dwyer Home For Funerals, 495 Park St. New Bedford Friday, January 2nd at 8 AM. Funeral Mass at Our Lady of the Assumption Church at 9 AM. Burial will follow in St. John's Cemetery. Visiting hours Thursday, January 1st from 4-7 PM.
