LOWELL—Mary M. O’Connor, 91 years old, a lifelong resident of Lowell, died Thursday afternoon at the Sunny Acres Nursing Home, in Chelmsford.
She was born in Lowell, on February 7, 1912, a daughter of the late Jeremiah and Annie (Lynch) O’Connor. She was a graduate of Sacred Heart Grammar School, Lowell High School and the St. John’s Hospital School of Nursing. She received her B.S. and M.S. in Nursing Administration at St. John’s University, in Long Island, NY.
Miss O’Connor was a U.S. Navy Nurse during and after World Was II, serving tours in the South Pacific and Europe. She was a highly decorated Navy Commander and upon her discharge was attached to the U.S. Navy Nurse Corps Reserve.
She was a communicant of the Sacred Heart Church and held membership in the Holy Rosary Sodality of that parish, the Lowell Oblate Mission Club, and AARP. She was a member of the St. John’s Hospital Alumna, St. John’s University Alumni and Sigma Nu Epsilon. Mary belonged to the Boston Archdiocese Council of Catholic Nurses, the Catholic Nurses of the Merrimack Valley, the Paul Revere Chapter, Retired Officers Association; the Disabled American Veteran’s, Edith N. Rogers, Chapter #025; and the Women’s Overseas Service League (WOSL), Boston Unit.
Surviving her are several nieces and nephews.
She was the sister of the late Anne Morris, Jeremiah P. O’Connor and Catherine M. Mallinen.
Friends may call on Monday, May 5th, at the MAHONEY FUNERAL HOME, 187 Nesmith Street, (Rte. 38), from 5 to 8 PM. Her Funeral Mass to be offered Tuesday, May 6th, at 9:30 AM at the SACRED HEART CHURCH. Burial in St. Patrick Cemetery.
