Lawrence G. Jones
Boston College Professor emeritus
Lawrence G. Jones of Cambridge MA died Monday, Nov. 24, 2008, at
Briarwood Nursing Home in Needham. He was 86.
Born in Scranton PA, he attended Lafayette College, served in the the
U.S. Navy in WW II as a Chaplain’s Assistant, then received an M.A. in
Russian at Columbia and a Ph.D. in Linguistics from Harvard.
Before coming to Boston College, where he founded the Department of
Slavic & Eastern Languages and Literatures and the Program in
Linguistics, he had served as Assistant Dean of the Graduate School of
Arts & Sciences at Harvard and with the Woodrow Wilson Fellowship
Foundation.
Prof. Jones taught and pubished in the areas of acoustic phonetics,
Russian and English poetry, general linguistics, and Slavic Studies.
Interment in Scranton PA, requiem masses at St Paul’s/Cambridge and at
Boston College, and a memorial service will be held at Boston College
in the second semester.
