Mary Jane (Jennings) Johnson, 88, of Hudson and formerly of New York City and White Plains, NY, died peacefully at the home of her son Paul, Monday, November 24.
Born in Salt Lake City, Utah, she was the daughter of the the late Harold S. and Mary C. Jennings, and the wife of Emil A. Johnson who died in 1973.
A lover of education, she attended the University of Utah and received her undergraduate and masters degree from New York University.
She dedicated fifty years of her life to education, first as a teacher and administrator in New York City and White Plains, NY, retiring there in 1986. She then moved to Hudson to be closer to her family, and continued teaching reading in the Stow Public Schools, until retiring again at the age of 81.
She enjoyed classical music, particularly Mozart, and played the violin. Her thirst for knowledge never diminished. She was an avid reader of non-fiction and listened to books on tape every day until her passing. She enjoyed caring for her two cats, traveling, and mostly spending time with her beloved family, who greatly appreciated her, were inspired by her, and respected her strength, wisdom and love. They particularly enjoyed spending time conversing with her about everything under the sun. She will be missed.
She is survived by her two sons, Mark D. Johnson and his wife Carla of Mason City, Iowa, and Paul R. Johnson and his wife Lynne of Hudson. She leaves her wonderful grandchildren, Becky Pitofsky and her husband Jim of Phoenix, AZ, Jesse Johnson and his wife Claire of Menlo Park, CA, Katrina Johnson of L. A. , CA, Eryn Johnson and her husband Carlos of Somerville, Joshua and Zachary Johnson, both of Hudson and four great grandchildren, Chloe, Isis, Asher and Miles.
Calling hours will be from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Monday, December 1 at the Tighe-Hamilton Funeral Home, Inc. 50 Central Street, Hudson, MA. There will be a short service following at the funeral home beginning at 8:00 p.m.
