Obituary

John W. Edmonds, Jr., 60, of New Bedford died April 25, 2003 at St. Luke's Hospital unexpectedly.

He was the son of the late Esther (Blake) Almeida and step-son of the late Joseph Almeida.

Mr. Edmonds was born in Brooklyn, NY and lived in New Bedford most of his life.

He was a graduate of Holy Family High School, class of 1960.

Mr. Edmonds was formerly employed as a police officer with the New Bedford Police Dept. for many years until his retirement in 1983.

He served as a sergeant in the US Marines during the Vietnam War and was the recipient of the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal with device, Rifle Marksmanship Badge, and the Vietnam Medal with 1 star.

Mr. Edmonds was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Andrews-Dahill Post 1531 and a member of Loyal Order of Moose Lodge.

Survivors include his brother, Noel E. Almeida, and his wife Janet, of New Bedford; a sister, Dr. Deirdre Ann Almeida of Spokane, Washington; a niece, Mariah American-Horse of Spokane, Washington; 2 nephews, Ned Almeida and Daniel Almeida, both of New Bedford; several cousins.

Visiting hours Wednesday, April 30th 4-8 PM.
