Edgar Thomas Atkins, Jr., 92, Charlotte, North Carolina formerly of Clarksville, went home to be with the Lord,Wednesday, November 19, 2008, at Carmel Hills Christian Care Center. The funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Neal-Tarpley Chapel with Dr. Roger Freeman officiating. Burial will be in Resthaven Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday and from 9 a.m. until the hour of the service Saturday at the funeral home. Neal-Tarpley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Mr. Atkins was born in Clarksville, TN, on November 27, 1915 to Edgar T. Atkins, Sr., and Mary Lou Atkins. Because of health issues, he moved to Charlotte, NC, in 2002 to live with his only daughter and her husband, Patsy and Doug L'Hommedieu. Besides his parents, Mr. Atkins was preceded in death by his wife of 56 1/2 years, Johnie P. Atkins; a brother, Hugh Atkins, and two sisters, Jewell Gunter and Irma Wilson. Besides his daughter and son-in-law, Mr. Atkins is survived by two grandchildren, Daniel L'Hommedieu (Hannah) of Holly Springs, NC, and Rachel Welch (Jeff) of Greensboo, NC, and five great -grandchildren, Caleb L'Hommedieu and Libby, Bethy, Bobby Douglas, and David Welch. Also surviving are two brothers, Lauren Atkins, of Cunningham, TN and John Atkins (Dora) of Clarksville, TN; one sister, Lois Anderson (Leonard) of Bessemer, PA, and one sister-in-law, Violet Atkins of Clarksville, TN; and many nieces and nephews. Mr. Atkins will be remembered for the loving care he gave to his wife for many years at home and then for his daily devotion to her for almost six years that she was in a nursing home. The family would like to thank the caregivers at Carmel Hills Christian Care Center and Mecklenburg Health Care for the loving care they gave to Mr. Atkins during the final years of his life. Thanks also to a special friend, Lizzie Latta. Family will serve as pallbearers.
