TEWKSBURY - Gordon Sumner Fernald, age 73, died peacefully on Friday, October 17, at his home in Tewksbury, surrounded by his family, following a brief battle with cancer. He was the husband of Mary Ellen (Lane) Fernald.
He was born in Somerville, April 6, 1935, the son of the late Herbert S. and Alice (Lovejoy) Fernald. He was raised in Somerville and graduated from Somerville High. He resided in Tewksbury and Cape Porpoise, Maine.
He entered into the U.S. Navy during the Korean War, and served in Cuba.
He went on to graduate from Wentworth Institute, and became an electrical/mechanical design engineer for the Sanborn Company, and later the Adcole Company.
Besides his wife, he is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Michael G. and his wife Alicia (Belleville) Fernald of Hudson NH, Brian G. and his wife Valerie (Berger) Fernald of Chelmsford, Joseph L. and his wife Lori (Dembkoski) Fernald of Hudson NH; six grandchildren, Brittany of Pittsburg, NH, Matthew of Chelmsford, Brad of Hudson, NH, Jarrett, Daniel, and Nathan all of Chelmsford; and one great granddaughter, Olivia.
At his request funeral services are private.
A MEMORIAL SERVICE WILL BE HELD SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 9, FROM 11:00 A.M. UNTIL 3:00 P.M. IN THE HOLIDAY INN, HIGHWOOD DRIVE (RTE 133) NORTH TEWKSBURY.
In lieu of flowers a donation may be made in his honor to Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University, Office of Development, 200 Westboro Road, North Grafton MA, 01536.
