Obituary

Anita R. Alexander, 91, joined her beloved husband of 63 years after a week’s separation. She died at Mary Elizabeth Nursing Home in Mystic of congestive heart failure. She was born in Washington, D.C. on May 20, 1911 to Charles and Louie H. Richardson. She was able to support her mother from the age of 17 by first becoming a legal secretary. She had many secretarial jobs including being secretary to the hospital administrator where she met her husband, John and married in 1939. She worked for the American Girl Scouts and served on numerous committees in the northern Virginia area, lastly becoming the treasurer for the Northern Virginia Humane Society. Anita was an excellent hostess and cook, golfer, artist, and duckpin bowler.

Anita was well loved as wife, mother and friend. She spent the last three and a half years in Connecticut near her daughter and family. She leaves behind a legacy of love and patience and her sense of humor will get the family through. She joins her husband, Dr. John E. Alexander and her beloved brother, Robert Richardson. She is survived by her three children, Dr. John M. Alexander of Richmond, Virginia, Hazel A. Watson (Mrs. Charles E., Jr.) of Ledyard, and Donald A. Alexander of Vienna, Virginia. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Standish Alexander and Sterling Alexander reside in Virginia. Shelley M. Watson and Rachel S. Watson are in Connecticut.

A private ceremony will be held at Arlington National Cemetery in May. Donations may be made to any Humane Society.
