TAUNTON - Edward “Wimpy” McGaughran, the beloved husband of Lucille (Leal) McGaughran, died on Tuesday, Oct. 14th at Morton Hospital, following a brief illness. He was 80.
Born in Taunton, he was the son of the late John and Mary Jane (Donahue) McGaughran.
Edward attended Coyle High School, left to join the U.S. Navy during WW II, and later graduated from Taunton High School in 1949. He received an associate’s degree from Bristol Community College.
Edward retired from the Taunton Police Department in 1983. A member of the Knights of Columbus, he served on the Board of Directors of the Taunton Boys and Girls Club, and was a Taunton Park & Recreations commissioner. He also played football for the Taunton Herrings in the Semi-Pro Football League.
He led a very active life, spending time with his family and following all the local teams. He spent many years with area youth at Hopewell Park, the Taunton YMCA, and the Taunton Boys & Girls Club.
Edward was an extraordinary father to his children, Susan and Eric Davis of Taunton, Edward and Ida McGaughran of Taunton, and Paul and Margie McGaughran of Middleboro, and was a very special grandfather to Matthew and Samantha McGaughran, Nathan and Leah Davis, and Ryan Nicholson. He was the brother of Mary Katon of N. Dighton, and the late John McGaughran, Jr. and Jean Maxwell. He leaves several nieces and nephews.
His funeral will be held from the Silva Funeral Home, 80 Broadway on Saturday, Oct. 18th at 9 a.m. followed by a funeral mass at St. Mary’s Church at 10 a.m.
Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Calling Hours will be Friday, Oct. 17th from 4 to 7 p.m.
