Evans, GA – Wanda Brown Owens, 75, entered eternal life on Thursday October 9, 2008 at Brandon Wilde.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM on Thursday October 16, 2008 at Brandon Wilde. Burial will be on Thursday November 20, 2008 at Arlington National Cemetery.
Survivors include her devoted husband, Claude Owens, two brothers, James H. Brown of Louisville, KY, her twin brother, Warren M. Brown of New Washington, IN, and a sister, Martha B. McKnight of Evans, GA. She is also survived by eight nieces and nephews and eight great nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a daughter, Donna Lynn Lesniack.
Wanda worked several years as a secretary, but her strong commitment was to education. She received her B.A. degree from Hanover College, Hanover, IN; her master’s degree and three advanced specialist degrees from Indiana University. She began her teaching career in Indiana. She also taught in Illinois and for two years in Japan for the Department of Defense. Wanda and Claude spent two years with the Peace Corps working with physically challenged adult students in Lesotho, South Africa. She also taught Sunday school and Vacation Bible School at First Presbyterian Church in Jeffersonville, IN.
She enriched her thirty years of teaching by traveling broadly in the United States, the Caribbean, and in several countries in Europe and Asia. As an avid sportswomen Wanda jogged regularly, participated in several marathons, played league tennis, and participated three times in a bicycle trek across Iowa. She put hundreds of miles on a stationary bicycle. Wanda had a delightful since of humor which endeared her to her nieces and nephews. They were always happy when “Aunt Sissie came for a visit”.
