Serge Kunica
KUNICA, Serge A Wellesley resident for 47 years, passed away on Sunday, September 21, 2008. He was 80. Mr. Kunica was born in Knieja, Poland of Ukrainian parents. He graduated from the University of Technology in Munich, Germany with a Degree in M.E., M.S., P.E. This is also where he met his wife of 54 years, Waltraud (Schiessl) Kunica. Shortly after Serge and Waltraud married, they left for America where Mr. Kunica began his lifelong career in engineering. Moving to Wellesley in 1961, Mr. Kunica worked for Barry Corporation developing vibration isolation mechanisms. Later in his career, Mr. Kunica was on Itek Corporations team which developed the camera for the Viking I Lander. While at Itek in 1977, Mr. Kunica received the Inventors Award. After his employment in industry he was granted an appointment from MIT to Lincoln Laboratories Optical Aerospace Research Department. Mr. Kunica was a member and served on the executive committee of the ASME. He was a member of the MIT Club, American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Goethe Society and Wellesley Assemblies. Mr. Kunica is survived by his wife, Waltraud Kunica; his children Doris (Kunica) Wright and her husband Bill Wright, of Bar Harbor, Maine; Enora (Kunica) Rogers and her husband Kevin Rogers of Seabrook, Texas; his grandchildren Sydney Wright of Bar Harbor, ME; Kyle Rogers and Sean Rogers of Seabrook, Texas; a sister Ludmilla Reinke of Edmonton, Canada; a nephew George Eglar of Edmonton, Canada; and a step-brother Yaroslaw Kunycia of Haddon Heights, New Jersey. A Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, Sept. 26 at 9 AM in St. Paul's Church, Wellesley. A private burial will follow the service at Woodlawn Cemetery in Wellesley.
