Obituary

Worcester – Francis X. Olson, 91, of Worcester, died Thursday, September 11th in the wonderfully supportive care of the St. Francis Home after a short illness.

Mr. Olson is the widower of Mabel (Bingham) Olson, his loving wife of 62 years, who died in 1999. He is survived by his son Robert F. Olson and his wife Judith of Worcester, his daughter Jean T. Corbett of Brunswick, ME, his daughter Kathleen A. Carey and her husband Stephen of Brunswick, ME, his son Michael F. Olson and his wife Patricia of Hampton, NH and his close niece Claire Sundstrom of Shrewsbury, MA. Along with many other nieces and nephews, Francis leaves a loving group of 10 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

Francis was born in May of 1917, the son of the late Bridget and John Olson of Worcester, MA. Francis often recalled his early days in South Worcester, much of it spent playing baseball at Maloney Field (now named for his coach, Harry Sherry). He retired in 1975 from American Steel and Wire after 33 years with the company.

Fran’s devotion to his wife Mabel and his family, along with his love of politics, his Irish/Norwegian heritage and all things Red Sox kept him passionate always about life. He was a member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Church and St. Joan of Arc Church both of Worcester.

A Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, September 15th at 10 AM in Sacred Heart of Jesus Church 600 Cambridge St. Burial will follow in St. John’s Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Jimmy Fund c/o the Dana Farber Cancer Institute 10 Brookline Place West, 6th floor Brookline, MA 02445 ATTN: Contribution Services.
