Obituary

WORCESTER-Marie F. Tangney, 72, died Monday, March 31st in St. Vincent Hospital. She leaves a brother, Eugene M. Tangney of Worcester; 3 sisters, Anna M. Darmody, Catherine T. Stevens and Eileen J. Valinski all of Worcester; 17 nieces and nephews and 22 great nieces and great nephews.

She was born in Worcester the daughter of Michael and Bridie (McCarthy) Tangney and lived here most of her life. She graduated from St. Peter’s High School, Our Lady of the Elms College with a Bachelor of Science Degree and Clark University with a Master’s Degree in Education. Ms. Tangney was a math teacher at Doherty High School for 33 years retiring in 1993. Previously, she was a nuclear chemist for 7 years for G.E. in Schenectady, NY and Baird Atomic Lab in Cambridge. She was a member of St. George’s Church, National Education Association, Our Lady of the Elms Alumni Association, and was the First Scholar in Residence at WPI from the Worcester School System in 1985.

The funeral will be Thursday, April 3rd from O’Connor Brothers Funeral Home, 592 Park Avenue with a Mass at 11:00 AM in St. George’s Church, 38 Brattle Street. Burial is in St. John’s Cemetery. Calling hours are Wednesday, April 2nd from 5:00 until 8:00 PM in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Marie F. Tangney Scholarship Fund, c/o The Educational Association of Worcester, 397 Grove Street, Worcester, MA 01605 or to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen Street, Framingham, MA 01701.
