GLOUCESTER: James H. “Herb” Nelson, Sr., 90, lifelong resident of Gloucester died Monday, September 1, 2008 at the Addison Gilbert Hospital. He was the loving husband of the late Doris M. (Starck) Nelson, who died in March of 2005. They had shared sixty years of marriage.
Born in Gloucester on November 19, 1917, he was the son of the late Olaf and Johanna (Nelson) Nelson. Mr. Nelson served in the U. S. Army Air Corps during WWII.
Civic minded, he was instrumental in city affairs, and was a member of the Capt. Lester S. Wass Post #3, American Legion and the Amvets Post #32 of Gloucester. He was also a skilled card payer and bridge champion.
Herb will be remembered by many as the owner of Nelson’s Clothing on Main Street, Gloucester. He will be remembered by his friends as a caring and generous man.
He is survived by his son, James H., Jr., and his wife, Nancy of Woburn, a daughter Jan Tyler-Nelson and her husband, Robert of Byfield, two grandchildren, Eric and Lauren Nelson of Woburn and his brother-in-law, Delmar Starck of Rockport. He was predeceased by his sister, Grace (Nelson) Starck.
In keeping with his wishes, funeral services will be held privately. There are no visiting hours.
