Obituary

TAUNTON – Charles Ferreira, husband of the late Constance M. (Varella) Ferreira, died at the Marian Manor on Saturday, Aug. 30th following a lengthy illness. He was 88.

Born in Taunton, he was the son of the late Serafin C. and Mary Jose (Bartel) Ferreira.

Educated in Taunton schools, he later served in US Army during WW II. An Infantryman with the 22nd Infantry of the 4th Division, he participated in many battles and campaigns including the Normandy Invasion of Utah Beach on D-Day.

During the Battle of Hurtgen Forest, fought in Germany, he was wounded in action, and subsequently awarded the Purple Heart. Among the other many medals and decorations he received, he was also awarded the Bronze Star Medal.

A foreman for the former New Jersey Rubber Company, he retired at the age of 66 after having worked there for over 37 years.

He also worked as a custodian for the Taunton School Department and as a groundskeeper for Taunton Catholic Cemeteries.

A communicant of St. Anthony Church in Taunton and life member of the VFW Post 15022 in Boston, he enjoyed fishing and was an avid Red Sox fan.

He leaves 2 sons, Charles J. “Chuck” Ferreira and his wife Janice of N. Grafton, and Ronald A. Ferreira of Taunton; 7 brothers, Joseph, George, Serafin, Edward, Raymond, James, and Robert Ferreira, all of Taunton; 2 sisters, Mary Ventura of N. Dighton and Evelyn Mastromarino of Taunton; 2 grandchildren, Jessica Shankey of E. Longmeadow and Chris Ferreira of Hampton, NH; 2 great-grandchildren, Alexa Grace Shankey and Aidan Brian Shankey, both of E. Longmeadow; and many nieces and nephews.

He was also the brother of the late Lewis and Frederick Ferreira.

His funeral will be held from the Silva Funeral Home, 80 Broadway on Wednesday, Sept. 3rd at 10 a.m. followed by a funeral mass at St. Anthony Church at 11 a.m. Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery. Relatives and friends are invited to attend.

Calling Hours will be Tuesday, from 5 to 8 p.m.
