Obituary

Jesup-Betty Joan Harper Fisher, age 74, passed away Thursday, August 21, 2008. Mrs. Fisher was born and raised in Screven, Georgia and currently living in Jesup. Mrs. Fisher was involved in numerous activities throughout her lifetime. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Jesup, helping as an Outreach Leader and with the tape ministry, a member of the Historical Society, a member of the Consumer Advisory Council at the Post Office, and a member of the City of Jesup Ethics Board. She was a lifetime member of the Wayne Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, and a board member of the American Red Cross. Mrs. Fisher was a lifetime Girl Scout and a Boy Scout leader for over thirty years in both the United States of America and Egypt. She was a Daughter of the American Revolution, a past board member of the American Heart Association, and a member of the Peachy Clean Club. She was a past member of the Women’s Club in the United States and Iran.

In addition, Mrs. Fisher was extremely active and interested in many Garden Club organizations throughout Georgia. She was a member and officer of the Oleander District Garden Club of Georgia, Incorporated. She was a member of the Dogwood Garden Club. She held lifetime memberships in the State Garden Club, the Deep South Garden Club, and the National Garden Club. Mrs. Fisher was alternately a past president, vice-president, and secretary of the Wayne County Garden Club Council. She won the outstanding member awards for both the Garden Club of Georgia District and for the Garden Club of Georgia Council. Mrs. Fisher was particularly devoted to bringing the joy of gardening to school age children. She started three youth garden clubs in Jesup: “Martha’s Vineyard Gardening Club” at Martha Puckett Middle School, “Junior Oak” at Oak Vista School, and “Williams’ Thicket” at Arthur Williams Middle School.

For all of her efforts and love of the city, Mrs. Fisher was presented with the Chamber of Commerce Distinguished Service Award in 2005.

Mrs. Fisher was preceded in death by her mother, Ferris Aspinwall Harper, father, Paul G. Harper, and spouse, John M. Fisher, Jr. Mrs. Fisher is survived by her children, Walter Hopkins, James Hopkins, and Victor Fisher, all of Atlanta, Georgia, Melissa Flatt of Nashville, Tennessee, and John M. Fisher III of Orlando, Florida, and five grandchildren also survive.

Visitation will be held Monday, August 25, 2008 from 6:00 until 8:00 p. m. at Howard~Jones~Nobles Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, August 26, 2008 at 2:00 p. m. from the Jesup First Baptist Church with Dr. Michael Von Moss officiating. Interment will follow in the Jesup City Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to Hospice of South Georgia, 117 Drennon Drive, Jesup, Georgia 31545.
