EVANS – U.S. Army COL (R) John R. Ivanhoe, DDS, 65, entered into rest on Saturday, August 16, 2008 at his residence.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, August 24, 2008 at 3:00 PM at Platt’s Belair Road Chapel with Reverend Connie Plummer officiating.
Col. Ivanhoe was born in Mineola, Texas, and attended New Iberia High School in Louisiana. He attended South Western University in Lafayette.LA He went on to receive his DDS degree from the Loyola University School of Dentistry in New Orleans, LA.
He received his post doctoral training at Fitzsimmons Army Medical Center.
In his professional career, he achieved many accomplishments and appointments. He was Diplomate on the American Board of Prosthodontists in 1979, and was appointed Consultant of the United States Army Area Dental Laboratories at the Surgeons General Office in Washington, DC from 1985 to 1989. He was Commander at the Area Dental Laboratory at Ft. Sam Houston, Texas from 1984 to 1986 and at Ft. Gordon, Georgia from 1986 to 1989. He was also on the Editorial Review Board of the Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry from 1999 to the present.
His many awards included Outstanding Teacher of the Year (Sophomore Class) in 1992 at the University Of Nebraska School Of Dentistry, where he was bestowed a faculty membership with the Alpha Alpha Chapter of Omicron Kappa Upsilon. At the Medical College of Georgia School of Dentistry. He was awarded Outstanding Faculty Member in 1996 and the Teaching Excellence Award in 2004. He also served as Vice Speaker of the House of Delegates at the American College of Prosthodontists from 1996 to 2000, and was nominated as Examiner for the American Board of Prosthodontists by that same organization. In addition, he received the Professionalism Award in 1999 from the American College of Dentists.
Col. Ivanhoe was a member of many scientific and professional societies, including the American College of Prosthodontists, where he was Vice President of the Nebraska Section in 1993, and charter member and President of the East Georgia section from 1994 to 1995. He was also a member of the Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine (1997 to present), the American Association of Dental Schools (1992 to 1997), the American Cancer Society (1992), the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation (1992), Boat Captain of the Handicap Fisherman of America (2004), and the Unites States Power Squadrons (2000 to present), where he served as Captain for the Heart of South Regatta in 2004 and as Lt. Commander from 2006 to 2007. He was designated as a Life Member of the American Dental Association, a member of the American Dental College Association (2003 to 2005), the Federation of Prosthodontic Organizations (1972), the International College of Dentists (1985 to 1988), and the 2002 President of the Kappa Lambda Chapter of Omicron Kappa Upsilon.
In the last five years, he made 12 presentations at National, Regional and State level meetings, and was published in 32 abstract and referred journals, as well as six professional textbooks and three teaching manuals.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Mary Alice Guidry Ivanhoe, a daughter, April Anne Ivanhoe Magill, and her husband, Joe of Alpharetta, two grandchildren, Trey Magill and Avery Ivanhoe Magill, and two sisters, Mrs. Dianne Hunter of Houston,TX, and Mrs. Frances Hanson Broken Arrow,OK.
