New Bedford – Joseph P. Arruda, aged 76 yrs., passed away at home after a long illness on Sunday, August 17, 2008. He was the husband of Phyllis R. (Spiliotis) Arruda of New Bedford and father of Janet L. Ferreira and her husband Stephen of Acushnet, Patti A. Marshall and her husband Brian of New Bedford, and Susan J. Correa and her husband Steven of New Bedford. He was also the Father of the late Steven J. Arruda. Survivors also include 3 Grandchildren Shaun Ferreira and his wife Kelly, Madie Lynn Ferreira and Benjamin Pereira. 2 Sisters Beatrice Arruda and Irene Mello both of New Bedford and the late Inez Goulart, and several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Arruda was born in New Bedford and lived in this area all his life. He was the son of the late Julia (Sylvia) and Joseph P. Arruda. He worked at Goodyear Tire and Rubber for 35 yrs. Mr Arruda was an avid Yankees Fan. He was a U.S. Marine and was stationed at the U. S. Embassy in Lisbon for 2 Yrs. He was also in th National Guard.He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict.
Mr. Arruda’s Funeral will be Wednesday at the Perry Funeral Home, 111 Dartmouth St., at 8 a.m., followed by a Funeral Mass at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church at 9 a.m. Burial will follow at Rural Cemetery. Visiting hours will be Tuesday Evening from 5 to 8 p.m. Relatives and friends are invited.
