Lamont "L.A." Atkinson, 43, of New Bedford died August 16, 2008 unexpectedly at home. He was the husband of Robin L. (Offley-Monteiro) Atkinson
Born in Boston, the son of the late Jake Galloway and Mildred Atkinson, he lived in Boston most of his life before moving to New Bedford five years ago.
Mr. Atkinson was employed as a maintenance man with Peabody Properties in New Bedford. Prior to that, he was employed with Halkeen Management in New Bedford and V.H.S. Transportation in Easton.
He enjoyed cleaning his Cadillac, music, and drinking.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Lamont Alex Atkinson of New Bedford; 3 brothers, Al Dorsey of Roxbury, Mark Atkinson and his wife Kathy of Hazlet, NJ and Gerard "Jerry" Atkinson and his wife Jennifer of Nashua, NH; 4 sisters, Regina Williams and her husband James of Jesup, GA, Nina Wilson and Linda Atkinson, both of Nashua, and Francine Nelson of Brighton; his mother-in-law, Ann Monteiro of New Bedford; his father-in-law, warren Offley of Taunton; 2 sisters-in-law, Alana "Poopsie" Monteiro and her husband Tino of New Bedford and Donna Johnson and her husband Richard of Wareham; 4 brothers-in-law, Allan Monteiro and his wife Shana, Robert Monteiro, and Vern Cardoza, all of New Bedford and Richard Monteiro of New Britian, CT; his grandmother-in-law, Pauline Faria of New Bedford; 3 godchildren, Tyshawn Monteiro, Ronnel King, and Ernestasia Edwards; a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews including his aunt Linda Robinson of New Bedford and cousins Beanie, Kitten, Putten, Barb, Skip and Joe.
He was the brother of the late William "Frankie" Atkinson and Charles Atkinson, son-in-law of the late Robert Monteiro and grandson of the late Willie Mae Edward and Melvin Edward.
His Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, August 19th at 11 AM in the Saunders-Dwyer Home For Funerals, 495 Park St. New Bedford. Burial will follow in St. John's Cemetery. Visiting hours Wednesday, August 20th from 4-9 PM.
