Yvonne M. E. Johnson of Wellesley, MA died Sunday, August 3, 2008 at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital in Needham after an extended illness. She was 85. Mrs. Johnson was born on June 17, 1923 in Chatham, Ontario, Canada as the only child of Thelma and Charles Bowers. She moved to Michigan as a child and later became a U.S. citizen. She married Leslie D. Johnson in 1944, while he was serving in the Armed Forces. During this period, she received a commendation from the Civilian Personnel Branch of the Army at Fort Warren in Wyoming for her own contributions to the war effort. Mrs. Johnson returned to Michigan with her husband after the war. They moved to Wellesley, MA in 1959. Mrs. Johnson had a lively interest in everything around her and was deeply involved in the community. She was employed at John Liner Letter in Wellesley, served as a Brownie and Girl Scout leader, and was a member of the Wellesley Monday Club. A longtime volunteer at Leonard Morse Hospital, she contributed more than 5,000 hours of service. Mrs. Johnson volunteered in many capacities at the Wellesley Congregational Church, including a term as deacon. She volunteered at the Wellesley Senior Center making teddy bears for hospitalized children and at the Wellesley Congregational Church making hats for the homeless. Mrs. Johnson was also an avid gardener, bird watcher, seamstress, and knitter. She loved the ocean and reading. In addition to her husband of sixty-four years, she leaves her daughters, Sue J. Livermore and Elizabeth Ann Johnson; her sons-in-law, Jeffrey S. Livermore and Robert V. Carr; her grandchildren, Anne Livermore Rookey and her husband Karl Rookey, Carol Livermore-Clifford and her husband James Clifford, and Matthew J. Livermore and his wife Bethany Turner-Livermore; and her great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Rookey, Marian Rookey, Adam Clifford, and Noah Clifford. Funeral arrangements have been made by the Eaton Funeral Home in Needham and included a private burial and graveside service at Woodlawn Cemetery in Wellesley. A memorial service will be held at 2:30pm on Sunday, August 17th at the Wellesley Congregational Church, 2 Central St., Wellesley MA. Donations may be made in memory of Yvonne M. E.
