Obituary

DRACUT, MA – Walter “Eddie” Koniowka, 93, of Dracut died Saturday August 2, 2008 at his home. He was the husband of the late Angela “Nellie” Witkos Koniowka.

Born in Lowell on October 22, 1914, he was a son of the late George and Helen (Szostka) Koniowka.

Mr. Koniowka was raised and educated in Lowell. He moved to the Kenwood section of Dracut at an early age. He was the proprietor of East End Ice Company which provided home delivery of ice for ice boxes before electric refrigeration. He was also the proprietor of East End Oil Company.

Mr. Koniowka was a member of the Polish American Veteran’s Club and Dom Polski. He enjoyed working in his yard and gardening, playing cards and sports, following local politics and visiting friends and family. He had a lifelong love of animals and was an advocate for animal rights.

Mr. Koniowka is survived by a daughter Deborah Koniowka-Carroll, Principal of the Joseph Campbell Elementary School in Dracut; a son-in-law, Jack Carroll, a retired Chelmsford Firefighter; a sister-in-law Antonia (Tootsie) Witkos; and several nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by three brothers Francis, Stephen, and John Koniowka.

Friends may call at the DRACUT FUNERAL HOME, 2159 Lakeview Avenue, DRACUT on Thursday from 3 until 6 PM. His funeral service will be held from the funeral home on Friday at 7:45 AM, followed by his Funeral Mass to be celebrated at 9 AM at St. Francis Church in Dracut. Burial will follow in Oakland Cemetery in Dracut. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in his memory to the Nevins MSPCA, 400 Broadway, Methuen, MA 01844-2052.
