Obituary

ARTHUR PUTNAM "PUTT" TOWER of Hingham and Mattapoisett, died on Wednesday, July 9th at the South Shore Hospital in Weymouth. Mr. Tower was a life-long resident of Hingham and was the ninth generation of the Tower family in Hingham. He attended Hingham Schools and graduated from Francis Military Academy in New Jersey. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and a Member of the Edward Ball Cole American Legion Post in Hingham. For many years Mr. Tower served on the Hingham Housing Authority; and for 10 years served as the town’s first appointed constable. He also was a lifelong summer resident of the Antassawomock section of Mattapoisett.

Mr. Tower retired after 33 years as a manager with The New England Telephone Co. and was a member of the Telephone Company Pioneers. He was a part of the support group for the first Olympic Torch Relay in 1984 that went from the Maine coast to Los Angeles.

An active mason since 1959, Mr. Tower was a Past Master of Old Colony Lodge in Hingham, Past Master of the 18th Lodge of Instruction, a member of the Scottish Rite and the High Noon Club.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Betty (Johnston) Tower of Hingham; two sons, Arthur P. Tower, Jr. of Fairhaven and Steven J. Tower of Rockland; two grandsons, Thomas Tower and Steven Tower, Jr.; and several nieces and nephews. In addition, he was the brother of the late Jane Hutton and the late Virginia Moore, both formerly of Hingham.

A Memorial Service will be conducted on Thursday, July 17th at 2:30 PM at the Second Parish Church, 685 Main St. (Rt. 228), Hingham, MA 02043. Visiting hours and flowers omitted by request.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to Old Colony Lodge, A.F. & A.M., 8 Amber Rd., Hingham, MA 02043 or the Second Parish Church.

The interment in the Hingham Cemetery is to be private.
