Aldona M. Zirolis, 87

Aldona M. “Al” (Yakavonis) Zirolis, 87, of Norton formerly of Walpole and Dedham died on Tuesday June 17, 2008 at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. She was the beloved wife of the late Charles V. Zirolis to whom she was wed to for 57 years at the time of his death in 2002.
Born in Boston, MA on April 28, 1921 she was a daughter of the late Thomas and Petronella (Kendrick) Yakavonis.
She grew up in Boston, was educated in Boston schools and had also attended business schools in Boston. Mrs. Zirolis had worked for 5 years as a case worker for the Social Security Administration in Boston before retiring.
A resident of Norton since January she moved from Walpole where she resided for 25 years and had also been a former resident of Dedham for 25 years. While living in Walpole “Al” was quite active with the Walpole Seniors, she enjoyed playing bingo and served as a caller in both Walpole and Norfolk.
An exceptional gardener, she was featured on radio shows and in newspaper articles for her gardening skills. Her other hobbies included arts & crafts, sewing, embroidering and she was also an avid world traveler.
Since living in Norton she had attended St. Mary’s Church in Mansfield and was a former parishioner of the former St. George’s Church in Norwood.
She is survived by her loving and devoted daughter Dorothy A. MacQuown and her husband Craig of Norton. She was the sister of Helen Maloney of Boston and the late Anthony, Vincent, John, Paul and Anna Yakavonis and Eleanor Farrar, also surviving are several nieces and nephews.
Her funeral, to which relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend, will be held on Monday June 23rd at 8:00 A.M. from the Sherman & Jackson funeral home 55 North Main St. Mansfield followed by a Mass of Christian burial celebrated at 9:00 A.M. in St. Mary’s Church 330 Pratt St. (Route 106) Mansfield. Burial will follow in New Calvary Cemetery, Boston.
Visiting hours will be held on Sunday June 22nd from 4-7 P.M. at the Sherman & Jackson Funeral home.
