Obituary

ALBERT NEWTON, 68, of Wickford, died Tuesday 10 June 2008 at his home in Wickford Harbor. He was born in Pawtucket and raised there and in Smithfield where he was a resident for over 50 years. He is the son of Anna (Arsenault) Newton and the late Arthur Newton.

He was a 1957 graduate of Tolman High School and a 1961 graduate of Providence College. He served his country as a member of the Air Force Reserve from 1963 to 1969.

He was a Boy Scout in Troop 15, in Pawtucket and served as an assistant scoutmaster of Troop 3 in Greenville Rhode Island where he helped many young men learn first aid, camping skills, and achieve their goals in scouting. He encouraged and led his two sons, Keith Lewis and Bob Newton who earned the ranks of Life and Eagle, respectively.

He joined Blackstone Valley and Gas in 1962 and stayed with them through their multiple transitions to Blackstone Valley Electric, Eastern Utilities and their later merger with National Grid. He retired in 2002 (?) after being a rate analyst and spending more than 35 years with the company. Over the years, he also assisted many people with their taxes and worked for a short stint with H & R Block.

Being on the water was one of his passions in life. He was an avid sailor and could regularly be found racing or cruising with the Edgewood Yacht Club or on the waters of Narragansett Bay, Buzzards Bay or Long Island Sound. He also had a great love of cooking, reading, listening to classical music and attending the Opera. He turned his passion for cooking into opportunities to work at a number of local restaurants.

He is remembered by his family as a loving son and father and as a protective and caring brother to his only sister. In addition to many long term friends, Mr. Newton leaves four children, Robert Newton and his wife Beth Ann of McLean Va, Judith Newton and her husband Ben Ford of Cotati Ca, Jennifer Newton Bissonnette and her husband, David, of Eagle Creek, Ak, Keith Lewis and his wife Barbara of Tiverton, RI as well as his first wife and life-long friend Rosalind Newton of North Kingstown. He is also survived by one sister, Joyce Delage and her husband Bill of Forest Va, his mother Anna Newton of Forest VA; and 7 grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday at 9am in St. Michael Church, 80 Farnum Pike Georgiaville. Burial will be private. Visitation Thursday 5-7pm in the ANDERSON-WINFIELD Funeral Home, Rt. 44 at Greenville Common, Greenville. Please omit flowers.
