Obituary

Robert L. McCarthy, 69, of East Freetown died March 5, 2003 at home after a long illness.

He was the husband of the late Mary C. (Maloney) McCarthy,and son of the late Joseph L. and Mary A. (Murphy) McCarthy.

Mr. McCarthy was born in New Bedford and raised in Fairhaven before moving to East Freetown in 1971. He summered with his family at Wilbur's Point in Fairhaven.

He was a communicant of St. John Neumann Church, East Freetown.

Mr. McCarthy was formerly employed as a headmaster at George R. Austin Middle School in Lakeville until his retirement. He had previously been a headmaster at Apponequet High School and a housemaster and teacher at New Bedford High School. He served on the Freetown Lakeville School Committee.

Mr. McCarthy was a lifetime member of the National Education Association, a member of the Massachusetts Teachers Association, and a member of Freetown Council on Aging.

He served in Germany with the US Army.

Mr. McCarthy enjoyed gardening, reading and bird watching.

Survivors include 3 sons, Sean R. McCarthy and Christopher D. McCarthy, both of East Freetown and Neal T. McCarthy, his wife Michelle Fontaine, of Fall River; 2 sisters, Elsie Lee Marvin of Mattapoisett and Betty Pendergast of Marion, several nieces nephews and cousins.

Funeral from the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New BedfordMonday, March 10th at 8:45 AMFuneral Mass at St. John Neumann Church, East Freetown at 10 AM.Relatives and friends are invited to attend.

Visiting hours Sunday, March 9th from 5-8 PM.

Interment St. Anthony's Cemetery, Mattapoisett.
