Obituary

New Bedford – Harry Kenyon, 93, of New Bedford died peacefully at home on June 3, 2008 surrounded by his family. He was the beloved husband of the late Edith T. (Powers) Kenyon for 60 years. Harry was better known as "pup" to his friends, family and especially his grandchildren.

Harry was born in Pawtucket, RI, son of the late Joseph A. and Emily (Dolby) Kenyon, and was a resident of New Bedford for 88years. He was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII, serving in the Military Police in New Guinea and was a recipient of related service awards and medals. He worked as a police officer for the New Bedford Police Department for 32 years and retired as a Captain in 1975. After his retirement, he worked as a bookkeeper for Donovan Construction Company until 2005.

Harry was Past Master and treasurer of the Star in the East Lodge and received the Joseph Warren Award. Through the course of his life, he served his community well by serving on the Board of Directors for the Volunteers of America, the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children, the Interfaith Church Council and other community organizations. He was an avid Red Sox fan, enjoyed gardening, nature and was a bird enthusiast.

Family meant everything to Pup. He was an avid sports spectator at his grandchildren’s sporting events, especially at Bishop Stang High School. He will always be remembered for his commitment and loyalty to his family, friends and Country. He always wore his flag on his lapel with pride. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Survivors include his children: Dr. Paul Kenyon of Hawaii and New Bedford, David Kenyon and his wife Susie of Nashua NH, Nancy Donovan and her husband Thomas of Pocasset, MA and Stephen Kenyon and his wife Claire of Acushnet; his grandchildren: Jeffrey, Jennifer and Jessica Kenyon, Kristen Stanton and Kelly Donovan; his faithful companion: Marjorie Massey; and guardian angel: Margaret Kigundu.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend:

Visiting hours on Thursday, June 5, 2008, 5:00-8:00 P.M. at the Kirby Funeral Home, 61 Tarkiln Hill Road, New Bedford.

Masonic service conducted by the Star in the East Lodge and funeral service on Friday, June 6, 2008 at 9:00 A.M. at the funeral home.

Flowers are acceptable or memorial donations may be made to the Patient Care Fund of Mashpee, P.O. Box 1222, Mashpee, MA 02649.

Interment in Acushnet Cemetery, Acushnet.
