Alicia “Lee” (Mellon) O’Malley, 76, of Mansfield died peacefully on Tuesday June 3, 2008 surrounded by her loving family in the comfort of her home. She was the beloved wife of Bernard S. O’Malley to whom she was wed on December 5, 1953.
Born in Port Chester, New York on June 25, 1931 she was a daughter of the late Edward C. Mellon and Elizabeth (Graham) Mellon Sweeney.
She grew up in Port Chester and was educated through the eighth grade in Port Chester schools. In her freshman year she moved to Foxboro and was a 1949 graduate of Foxboro High School. She furthered her studies at St. Elizabeth Hospital School of Nursing in Brighton, graduating in 1952.
Lee started her nursing career as a Registered Nurse at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital and later worked at hospitals in San Benito, Texas and in Norman, Oklahoma for several years and then for 10 years at Sturdy Memorial Hospital. Before retiring in 1994, she was employed as a school nurse for the Mansfield school system for 20 years.
An active parishioner of St. Mary’s Church in Mansfield, Lee faithfully served as a religious educator, a Eucharistic Minister, a parish nurse and played an active role as a member and former chairperson of the Respect Life Committee.
Mrs. O’Malley was an avid gardener and enjoyed quilting with her friends. She treasured time spent with her loving family and especially baking cookies and making “Gramma-Jam” with her grandchildren. She had made her home in Mansfield for the past 42 years.
In addition to her loving husband Bernie she is survived by her devoted children Mary O. Jackson and her husband Robert of Mansfield, Patrick J. O’Malley and his wife Tammy of Foxboro, Edward W. O’Malley and his wife Caroline of Mansfield, Kathleen O. Stearns and her husband Stephen of Lyman, Maine, James Michael O’Malley of Belleville, Illinois, Ellen O’Malley of Mansfield, Theresa O. Nevers and her husband John of Mansfield and Alicia O. Yaghoobian and her husband Scott of Mansfield. She was the sister of Edward G. Mellon of Attleboro, Robyn (Sweeney) Berry of Maine and Florida and the late Joseph Mellon, also survived by her cherished 20 grandchildren, 1 great grandson and many nieces and nephews.
Her funeral, to which relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend, will be held on Friday June 6th at 8:00 A.M. from the Sherman & Jackson Funeral Home 55 North Main St. Mansfield followed by a Mass of Christian burial celebrated at 9:00 A.M. in St. Mary’s Church 330 Pratt St. (Route 106) Mansfield. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Mansfield.
Visiting hours will be held on Thursday June 5th from 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. at the Sherman & Jackson Funeral Home.
