Obituary

Alzira "Elsie" (Nunes) Viera, 75, of New Bedford died Thursday May 8, 2008 at St. Luke's Hospital after a long illness. She was the wife of the late Alfred Viera.

Born in New Bedford, the daughter of the late John and Elvira (Medeiros) Nunes, she lived in Dartmouth for most of her life.

Mrs. Viera was formerly employed as a stitcher for Jemy Sportwear and Gro-Togs Sportswear.

She was a member of the Moose Lodge and the Ladies Auxiliary Veterans of Foreign Wars in Acushnet. She was an avid Bingo player and loved dancing.

Survivors include three children, Kathleen Bellemare of Dartmouth, Alfred Viera, Jr., of Wareham, and Cheryl Swain of New Bedford; her companion, Alfred B. Mello of New Bedford; two brothers, Henry Nunes and John Nunes, both of New Bedford; a sister, Mary Nunes of New Bedford; 14 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and nieces, nephews, and godchildren.

She was the sister of the late Manuel Nunes, Josephine Allain, Lloyd Nunes, and Louis Nunes.

Her Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday at 10 AM at the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford. Burial will follow in St. John's Cemetery. Visiting hours will be on Monday from 4-8 PM. For directions and guestbook, please visit www.saundersdwyer.com.
