Maria L. (Freitas) Avelar, 77, died Monday, April 28, at her home after a short illness. She was the wife of 52 years of Vasco C. Avelar. Born in Flores, Azores, Portugal, she was raised there and educated in Terceira, Azores, Portugal. Mrs. Avelar was a resident of Stoughton for 32 years. She worked for Raytheon in Norwood for several years, retiring several years ago. In her free time, she enjoyed flowers and gardening.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. Avelar is survived by her brothers Jose Freitas and Alberto Freitas both of Portugal. She was predeceased by her daughter Lidia F. Avelar. She is also survived by her caregiver and friend Elizabeth Vieira.
Funeral will be held from the Farley Funeral Home, 358 Park St. (Rt. 27) Stoughton on Friday, May 2 at 8 AM followed by a Funeral Mass at Immaculate Conception Church, Stoughton at 9 AM. Visiting Hours Thursday 4-8 PM. Donations in Maria’s memory may be sent to Caritas Hospice, 3 Edgewater Dr., Norwood, 02062. Burial will be at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Stoughton.
