Elvira (Mesquita) Jacobs, 84, of Benton, KY, formerly of Hudson, died Saturday, April 19 at Lourdes Hospital in Paducah, KY after a long illness. She resided in Hudson most of her life and has lived with her daughter Janice the past 2 years in Benton, KY.
She was the wife of the late William Roy Jacobs who died in 1998 and daughter of the late Albino and Maria (Coute) Mesquita.
For almost 30 years she was employed by the Hudson Public School system as a secretary, first to the superintendent and finally at Forest Avenue School until retiring in 1992. She also worked for the former Wadaquadic Worsted Mills, the former Powell Press, and the former Richard Harrity Co. for many years. She taught rug braiding for several years in the Adult Education Program in Hudson. She was a former member of the Hudson Historical Society and charter member and founder of the Hudson Garden Club. In addition to gardening, she sewed, enjoyed arts and crafts and made flower arrangements.
She is survived by her four children, Ronald Jacobs of Albany, NY, William Jacobs and wife Dora of Brownsville, TX, James Jacobs and wife Karen of Mooresville, NC and Janice Kelley and husband Phillip of Benton, KY. She is also survived by her sister, Julia Valera of Jacksonville, FL and seven grandchildren, Roy, Erika, Mitchell, David and Colin Jacobs of Mooresville, NC and Mariah and Jayden Kelley of Benton, KY. She was the sister of the late Arthur Mesquita of Clinton.
A funeral mass will be celebrated Thursday, April 24, at 9:00 a.m. in Saint Michael’s Church, 21 Manning St. Hudson. Burial will follow in Saint Michael’s Cemetery, Hudson. Calling hours will be held Wednesday, April 23 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Tighe-Hamilton Funeral Home Inc. 50 Central St. Hudson, MA 01749.
