Obituary

Joseph Robert Flasco, 81 of 2 Ball St. Pawcatuck, died April 18th, 2008 at his home with his family around him, after a long illness.

Joseph was born July 12th, 1926, in Warren, Ohio, to Joseph Anthony Flasco and Mary O’Malley Flasco.

He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Judith Marie (Lynch) Flasco, three daughters; Michelle Anne Johnson and Fiancée Orlando Peace of Pawcatuck, Mary Margaret Lastes of Pawcatuck, and Margaret Anne Flasco of Columbia, South Carolina.

He had five grandchildren; Mark and Christopher Lastes, Jeremy and Nicole Johnson, all of Pawcatuck, and Damien Robbins of Bozrah, CT. His cousin Carolan Pallo, her husband Richard and children, Richard, Thomas and Mary Kay of Youngstown, Ohio. His sister in law Joan Orlando, and her companion Robert Hirshaut, his niece Tanya Orr, and husband Frederick Orr, and grandniece Whitney Marie Orr, and niece Jill Orlando all of Springfield Massachusetts.

Joseph graduated from St. Ursaline High School, in Youngstown, Ohio in 1944. He attended King’s Point Merchant Marine’s Academy in King’s Point, New York. Joseph saw some action in the South Pacific, before World War II ended. He joined the Navy in 1950. Joseph was on several U.S. Navy Submarines, including the; U.S.S. K-1 Sub when former president Jimmy Carter was the executive officer on board. Also, he served on the Triton, which was headed by Cpt. Edward Beach. This submarine was submerged for 81 days. Joseph has been in about every country in the world during his time in the Merchant Marines, and his tour in the U.S. Navy. He retired from the Navy in 1973. He worked at Electric Boat from 1973, retiring in 1991.

Joseph and Judith were married in 1965 in North Franklin, CT. After retirement from Electric Boat, Joseph was a volunteer worker with TVCCA’s Meals on Wheels program. As a submarine veteran, he belonged to the Holland Club, and also was a greeter on the Nautilus Museum and very proud to do so.

Joseph was a lover of Classical music, and also loved listening to the music of John Phillip Souza. When he was a small boy his mother brought him to see John Phillip Souza in concert. Joseph was an avid Boston Red Sox and Cleveland Indians fan.

There will be a memorial service for Joseph at the Pilgrims Baptist Church at 27 Chase Hill Road, Ashaway, RI. April 25th, 2008 at 6:00PM. There will be no calling hours. There is also going to be a memorial service with Military honors for Joseph at the Submarine Base, Groton, CT on the Nautilus Submarine at a later date.
