Henry B. Newman, Jr., 80, of Derry, NH, formerly of West Dennis, MA and Fall River, MA died Wednesday, April 2, 2008 in the Parkland Medical Center, Derry. Mr. Newman was born in Bristol, RI on January 10, 1928, a son of the late Henry B. and Grace Isabelle (Munroe) Newman, Sr.. Henry was a Sergeant in the USMC and was honorably discharged in 1949. In 1963 Henry joined the Town of Dennis, MA Police Force and he retired in 1989 as a Detective Sergeant. Always being interested in children’s well being, he invented “Mike The Bike” with Bob Phillips, a family friend. “Mike” taught elementary school children about bicycle safety and Henry was invited all over New England to do presentations. Henry was a 32nd Degree Master Mason.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Cynthia Ann (Garvin) Newman of Derry, two daughters, Sandra Davidson of Derry, Sharon Checrallah of Andover, MA, two sons, Frederick Newman of Cotuit, MA, James Newman of Palm Bay, FL, nine grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and a sister, Barbara Jaycox of Providence, RI. Henry and his wife, Cynthia, also raised 32 foster children. He was predeceased by his sister, Jeanne Eva Newman and a brother, Robert Mitchel Newman.
There are no visiting hours. Following cremation a memorial service was held on Saturday, April 12, 2008 at 1:00pm in the Rockingham Christian Church, 5 Industrial Way, Unit 2, (in the back of the building) Salem, NH. The burial was in the North Burial Ground Cemetery, Bristol, RI. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Assoc., NH Affiliate, PO Box 31160, Hartford, CT 06150-1160.
