Obituary

Gordon B. Nute passed away at the South Shore Hospital on March 31 at the age of 84 after an extended illness. He leaves behind his loving wife of 64 years Rayann (Small) Nute, 2 sons, Ray W. Nute and his wife Deborah of Hopkinton, Philip Nute of Weymouth, and 1 daughter, Cynthia Hughes and her husband Dale of Pickerington, Ohio. Mr. Nute is also the grandfather of Michael G. Nute, Andrew W. Nute and M. Rachel Nute all of Hopkinton, and Brendan Hennelly and Stephen Hennelly both of Pickerington, Ohio. Gordon is predeceased by 1 daughter, Marsha H. Nute. He was born in New Bedford and participated in football and track at the New Bedford High School, graduating in 1941. After a post graduate year at Worcester Academy, he entered Cornell University in 1942. In February, 1943 he enlisted in the Army Air Corps and earned his wings as Navigator, attaining a rank of First Lieutenant. He completed 35 missions in the European Theater, flying with the 303 Bomb Group, 359th Squadron, stationed at Molesworth, England. After the war, he returned to Cornell and received a BME in Mechanical Engineering in 1949. Gordon and Rayann were married in 1944, having met when he was an Aviation Cadet stationed at Ellington Field in Houston, TX. She worked in the administration offices at Cornell while he attended school. They returned to New England in 1952, settling in Weymouth. Gordon worked as a Manufacturer’s Representative for Flagg, Brackett and Durgin, He acquired the company in 1962 on the death of the last owner and he and his wife worked together, he as the salesman and she in the office until retirement in 1990. Relatives and friends are invited to the Funeral at the C. C. Shepherd Funeral Home 134 Pleasant St. (Columbian Sq.) S. Weymouth on Saturday April 5 at 10 A.M. and the visiting hours on Friday from 3 to 7 P.M. Interment will be in Lakeview Cemetery in Weymouth. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made payable to the University of Massachusetts in Gordon’s memory for the Marsha H. Nute Memorial Scholarship C/O, Office of Treasurer, 301 Goodell Building, Amherst, MA 01003-0013.
