Eugene Frederick Modert, age 71, of 60 Rocky Hollow Rd, North Stonington, died suddenly Saturday at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital.
Gene was born in Le Sueur, MN on December 1, 1931 the son of Leo and Elizabeth Modert. Raised in Minnesota, he attended local schools and immediately entered the US Air Force where he served until June, 1955. He later earned his Bachelors Degree from Upper Iowa State University.
A longtime resident of the area, he was employed as a mechanical engineering technician at the Naval Underwater Sound Lab where he was given the Productivity Excellence Award before his retirement. After his retirement, he accepted a position as a Senior Mechanical Engineer at The Kildare Corporation of New London.
An accomplished artist and painter, some of his work continues on exhibit at the Mystic Art Association. He also enjoyed golfing and loved nature and wildlife.
He is survived by a son, Paul Modert of Hanover, CT, four siblings, Sylvan Modert of San Diego, Ralph Modert of Hugo, MN, Lois Jolly of Roswell, NM, and Eunice Lance of Landrum, SC, and his beloved companion of 8 years, Dawn Fleming of Gales Ferry.
The family will greet relatives and friends at The Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl Street, Historic downtown Mystic on Tuesday from 6:00-7:45pm followed by a service at 8pm. The Rev. Lisabeth M. Gustafson, pastor of the Old Mystic Baptist Church, will officiate.
Private burial with military honors will be in Old Plains Cemetery, No. Stonington.
