Ackel of Brockton February 7, 2003 John Ackel, Sr. 77 years. Husband of the late Margaret M. (Butler) Ackel. Beloved father of Brenda Ackel of Brockton; John Ackel, Jr. of Attleboro; Sharyn Churchill of Carver; Carole Ackel of Brockton; Donna Hill of Sharon; Janice Maurath and Katherine Mauro both of Brockton. Loving grandfather of Kimberly Djaafri, Derek Churchill, David Hill, Jr., Daniel, Devin and Dennis Hill, Melissa, Meagan, Joshua and Caitlin Maurath and Nicolas Mauro. Great grandfather of Khalil, Anees, Nicole, Michael and Emma.Brother of Dolores Swann of Villanova, PA and brother-in-law of Edward Griffin of Taunton.

Funeral from the J. Frank Conley Funeral Home 138 Belmont Street (Rte 123) Brockton Wednesday at 9 am. The Service of the Divine Liturgy will be celebrated at St. Theresa Maronite Catholic Church 343 N. Main Street, Brockton at 10 am. Burial in Calvary Cemetery. Visiting hours Tuesday 3-8 pm. Service of Incense at 6 pm.

Obituary

Mr. Ackel died Friday at the Caritas Good Samaritan Medical Center, Brockton after a period of failing health. He was born in Brockton son of the late George Ackel, Sr. and Catherine (Aseph) Ackel and remained a lifelong resident of the city.

He was a graduate of Brockton High School and furthered his education in the electronics field.For many years Mr. Ackel was the owner of Modern Radio and TV in Brockton. He also owned Modern Woodworking. When he was 15 years old he became the youngest person to earn his call letters for short wave radio.

He was a strong and independent man both intellectually and physically. He taught himself the Arabic language and traveled to Lebanon several times. At the age of 77 he taught himself to use a computer and enjoyed surfing the web.

He loved to bowl and belonged to several leagues including the Knights of Columbus. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, target practice and reading.He was a longtime member of St. Theresa Maronite Catholic Church and had served on many church committees.

He is survived by his son and 6 daughters, 11 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildrenOne sister and several nieces and nephewsHe was the brother of the late George Ackel, Jr., Florence Jones and Gloria Griffin.
