Obituary

CHARLES H. MCCARTHY Charles A. McCarthy Jr., a project manager at Digital Equipment Corp., died Friday Jan 31, 2003 at the E. N. Rodgers Memorial Veterans Hospital in Bedford. He was 71.Mr. McCarthy, a native of Skaneateles, NY received his mechanical engineering degree from Cornell University in 1953. Shortly after his graduation, he joined the Army and served in the Signal Corps, where he was responsible for transmitting information for the Army during the Korean War. In 1956 he began his career working for Texas Instruments. He moved to Massachusetts in 1972 to work for Digital in Marlborough. There he manufactured memory for many computers and oversaw production in the Far East, Mexico, Puerto Rico and Ireland until he retired in 1992. He was recognized for his work as a mentor with the Junior Achievement Program and volunteered for the American Cancer Society after his retirement. He was a member of the Longwood Cricket Club and enjoyed playing tennis, golf, and running. He also enjoyed photography.He is survived by his wife Elizabeth (Kelleher) McCarthy, his sisters Anne Stack of Greenwich CT, and Jeanne Hutchins of Ridgefield CT, and his brother J. Donald McCarthy of Los Angeles CA. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.Relatives and friends will gather at the Eaton & Mackay Funeral Home 465 Centre St. Newton Corner on Sat. Feb. 8 at 9:30 AM and proceed to a mass of Christian Burial in St. Theresa of Avila Church Centre St. West Roxbury at 11 AM. Interment will follow at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in West Roxbury. Visiting hours will be in the funeral home on Fri. Feb. 7 from 5-8 PM.In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Mass Alzheimer’s Assoc. 36 Cameron Ave. Cambridge MA 02140
