Mr. Arthur Underwood was born September 9, 1931 to Mr. Charlie and Mrs. Cathelean Underwood in Eutaw, Alabama. He peacefully departed this life on February 6, 2008 at his home surrounded by family.
Mr. Underwood grew up in Greene County where he attended public schools. He later joined the United States Army and retired after 22 years of proudly serving his country. His military service included the Korean Conflict and three tours in Vietnam. Upon retiring he located in Huntsville, Alabama where he and his family resided until his death.
Arthur confessed Christ at an early age and later reaffirmed his spiritual faith. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and sports of all kinds.
He was joined in holy matrimony to Mattie Oliver on April 27, 1968. They enjoyed many years together including their travels overseas and throughout the United States. One of Arthur's greatest pleasures was spending time with family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charlie and Cathelean Underwood; nine brothers, Cleveland, Luther, Napoleon, Oderris, Jessie, Franklin, Nebraska, Charlie and William Underwood; three sisters, Vertha Craig, Gertrude Lane and Kathrude Cunningham.
He is survived by a devoted wife, Mattie O. Underwood; three daughters, Helen (Cliff) Elder, Katrina Ware, Dorethea Underwood all of Tuscaloosa, Alabama; one son, Reginald M. (Carla) Oliver of Columbus, Ohio; five sisters, Willie Mae (Joseph L.) Lindsey of Mobile, Alabama, Vereal (George) Hill, Helen (John L.) Huntley, Marva (William) Haeem all of Buffalo, New York and Mary Ethel Hardy of Carson City, California; one brother, Roosevelt (Louise) Underwood of Eutaw, Alabama; numerous brothers-in-law and sisters-in-lay; devoted friends, Tommy Moss and Daniel Rabinowitz; five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Visitation for Mr. Arthur Underwood will be held on Wednesday, February 13, 2008 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. in the Nelms Memorial Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 16, 2008 from the Friendship Missionary Baptist Church at 3416 8th Street in Tuscaloosa, AL with Reverend Myron Hamner officiating. Interment will be in the Cedar Oak Memorial Park, Tuscaloosa, Alabama.
