Obituary

Jean M. Jackson, M.D. of Newton, Massachusetts, died of cancer and it’s complications on January 31, 2008.
A graduate of University of Maryland School of Medicine in 1967 she was an Intern & Resident of Medicine from 1967-1970 at the University of Maryland Hospital, a Research Fellow in Medicine at the Robert B. Brigham Hospital in Boston from1970-1972. Dr. Jackson was Chief Resident, Medicine at the University of Maryland Hospital 1972-1973 and Chief, Division of Rheumatology Department of Medicine University of Maryland Hospital from 1973-1975 an instructor Harvard Medical School and launched her clinical practice at the Robert B. Brigham Hospital Boston, MA, as the first female rheumatologist, followed by a clinical and teaching career at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital, joining the Rheumatology program at Children’s Hospital Boston MA in 1980.
Dr. Jackson was recognized for her distinguished contributions as an outstanding clinician educator by the Brigham and Women’s Hospital Department of Medicine in June 2005, was the recipient of the Arthritis Foundation Marian Ropes Physician’s Achievement Award and served as Vice President of the Massachusetts Arthritis Foundation and physician advisor to Scleroderma Association of Massachusetts.
She will be remembered for her character, depth of devotion to the practice of medicine and the extraordinary contributions to the lives of patients, family and friends.
Dr. Jackson leaves her mother Irja, brother John, sister-in-law Debbie, niece Melanie, and nephews Lyle and John. Godchild Joshua Davis, beloved cat Apache-450 and many devoted patients and friends.
Visiting hours will be held at the Eaton & Mackay Funeral Home 465 Centre Street, Newton Corner on Monday Feb. 4 from 4-8 PM.
A memorial service will be held at the Old South Church in Boston on Sat Feb 9 at 11 AM.
