Obituary

John Francis Sylvia Jr. passed away on January 29th, 2008 at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital after a brief illness.

John was born to John Francis Sylvia Sr. and Mary (Cruz) Sylvia in New London on December 7, 1936.

He lived and worked his whole life in Ledyard, including dairy farming, building his own home, driving school bus, and working 42 years for the Ledyard Board of Education in the Custodial/Maintenance Department, retiring in 2006 as the Head Custodian.

He enjoyed crabbing and sea-dooing at Bluff Point, his time spent with his best “Bub”, Brandy, and his vegetable gardens. His last “harvest” was one of his best ever for corn, pumpkins, and tomatoes.

John is survived by his daughter Dawn Quirolgico of Amherst, NH and her children Erica, Sarah, and Noah; his son John Scott Sylvia and his wife Lisa of Preston, CT and their children Lindsay and John Scott Jr.; his son Mark Sylvia and his wife Sally of Mystic, CT and their children Brittany and Jacob John; his daughter Holly Gagnon and her husband Bill of North Stonington, CT and their children Zachery, Bethany, and Riley. He is also survived by his brother Louis Sylvia of Ledyard and a sister, Alice Mattern of Preston.

Family and friends are welcome to attend a graveside funeral service at Lambtown Cemetery, Lambtown Rd, Ledyard, on Saturday, February 2nd, 2008 at 10am. There will also be a celebration of John’s life on Saturday, February 16, 2008 at Ledyard High School from 3-5pm. All are invited to attend. At John’s request, there will be no calling hours.
