Obituary

New Bedford - Joseph B. Figueiredo, 93, of Westport, passed away Sunday, January 20, 2008 at St. Luke’s Hospital after a brief illness. He was the devoted husband of Irene A. (Rogers) Figueiredo, they were married for 62 years.

Born in New Bedford, son of the late Manuel and Mary (Bettencourt) Figueiredo, he had lived in Westport for 44 years. A veteran of WWII, he served his country in the United States Army, earning the European, African and Mid East Theater Campaign Ribbons with 3 Stars and the WWII Victory and Honor Service Ribbons. In 1946, he founded Figueiredo’s Greenhouses on Hathaway Road in New Bedford and re-located to Pine Hill Road in Westport in 1964where the family business continues. Mr. Figueiredo was a Communicant of St. George Church, Westport, and a member of the Spartan Club, MA Flower Growers Association, MA Farm Bureau, VFW Post 1531 and the American Legion Post 145 of Westport. He loved and enjoyed his family, friends, making things grow and family vacations. He loved his life and considered himself very blessed as does his family for having him. Always blessings never losses.

Joseph was a loving father, grandfather and great grandfather to his daughter and son-in-law: Theresa-Marie F. and Terrance A Pimental of Dartmouth. Grandchildren: Craig and his wife Lynne of Dartmouth, Corey and his wife Susan of Dartmouth, Tobey and his wife Jessica of Fall River and Tyler and his fiancé Marie Miranda of New Bedford. Great Grandchildren: Cassandra, Seth, Riley, Hunter and Bryar. He is also survived by several sister-in-laws, a brother-in-law, nieces, nephews and Godchildren.

He was the brother of the late Irene Encarnacao, Mary Dutra, John Figueiredo and Charles Figueiredo.

Mass of Christian Burial to which relatives and friends are invited will be Wednesday, January 30, 2008 at St. George Church, Westport at 9:00 A.M.

Calling hours Tuesday 5 - 8 P.M. at the Potter Funeral Home.


Burial will be private.
