LOWELL - Russell H. McDermott, age 94, a resident of Lowell for more than 60 years, diedpeacefully on Saturday, Jan. 25, at the Lahey Clinic Medical Center in Burlington. He was thehusband of 61 years to Kathleen (Reedy) McDermott, who died in 1995.

He was born Sept. 27, 1908, in Lowell, a son of the late Michael and Theresa (Galvin)McDermott. He was educated in Lowell public schools, and graduated from Lowell High School. He continued his education in business and accounting at Lowell Technological Institute (nowU-Mass Lowell) and Northeasten University.

He was an accountant in Lowell for many years and was owner of R.H. McDermott andCompany, which he sold in the late 1960's, and which became Anstiss and Co. P.C. He was also abusiness manager for the Lowell Sun in the 1930's, and in his later years he developed aninnovative accounting method marketed as the Columbia Business System.He resided on East Merrimack Street in Lowell until 1968, when he moved to Nashua, N.H. Hehad since moved to Arlington, Mass. to reside with his daughter.

He was an excellent golfer and was a member of both Longmeadow Golf Club, where he servedas treasurer, and the Vesper Country Club. He won a number of tournaments in the 1940's and50's and was a Lowell City Champion. He also enjoyed thoroughbred horse racing, and he hadwritten a biography of the late champion jockey Harold "Red" Keene of Lowell. Mr. McDermottwas also an amateur inventor, and created a number of prototype products, including a slide-ruletype counter used for the game of blackjack. In his earlier years he was a member of the LowellElks Lodge.

He is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Maura M. and her husband Richard E. Jacunskiof Northwood, NH, and Kathleen L. McDermott of Arlington, MA, a grandaughter, Amanda B.Spurlin of Belmont, and many nieces and nephews.

He was also brother of the late Henry, Gerald, Lester, Edward, Charles, and Theresa McDermottand Mildred Lawlor.

His funeral service was held Jan. 29, in the Chapel at St. Mary's Cemetery. . A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at a later date.
