Obituary

Joseph S. Oliveira, Jr., 79, of New Bedford died Monday January 14, 2008 at home. He was the beloved husband of Eileen M. (Doyle) Oliveira.
Born in Fall River, he was the son of the late Joseph S. and Gloria (Mattos) Oliveira. He was formerly employed for more than 30 years at Continental Screw Company until its closing. He was also employed by the City of New Bedford before his retirement.
Mr. Oliveira served in the U.S. Army Air Force in Panama, Guam, and Japan from 1946 to 1951. He was a member of the Far Eastern American Armed Forces Baseball team (Feamcom Fliers) which won an international championship in 1947. He was a longtime member of the Whaling City Golf Club, Knights of Columbus Damien Council, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Andrews-Dahill Post 1531. He was a communicant of Holy Name of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish. Joe spent many hours on the golf course with his sons, grandsons, and the ProAm-ers at the "Whale." He was extremely proud of his successful family and his patient, loving wife of 55 years, who cared for him at home during his long illness.
He is survived by his wife Eileen; two sons, Bruce and his wife Pamela of New Bedford, and Philip and his wife Olivia of Lakeville; three daughters, Susan Carreira and her husband Chris of Rindge, NH, June Smallwood and her husband Mark of South Dartmouth, and Gail Furtado and her husband Al of New Bedford; three brothers, Dennis Oliveira of Fall River, Antone Oliveira of New Bedford, and Edward Oliveira; nine grandchildren, Christopher Carreira, Elizabeth Ring, Jeffrey and Ryan Massoud, Kimberly Smallwood, Karen, Kevin, Stephen, and Rebecca Oliveira; a great-grandson, Ethan Thomas Ring; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
His Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday at 9 AM at Holy Name of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church. Burial with military honors will follow in Riverside Cemetery. Visiting hours will be on Wednesday from 4-8 PM at the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford.
