SALEM- James F. Manning, 87, of Salem, died Monday morning, January 20, 2003, at the Salem Hospital following a short illness.
Born in Salem, he was the son of the late William A. and Lena (LeDuc) Manning.
A Navy veteran of WWII, he served in the Pacific Theater and held the rating of Phamacist’s Mate Second Class.
Mr. Manning had a lifetime affiliation with the Salem YMCA, where he was the Aquatic Director.
In 1931, as a student at Salem High School, he started as a page at the Salem Public Library, and continued with his affiliation over the years to his present position of Librarian. He was employed by the city of Salem at Forest River Park from 1972 to 1987.
He is survived by one brother, Kenneth H. and his wife M. Theresa Manning of Beverly, a sister, Mary L. Rogers of Round Pond, Maine, a sister-in-law, Marion Manning of Salem, a brother-in-law, Charles Diluiso of Salem, and several nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late William Manning, Philip E. Manning and Dorothy Diluiso.
A celebration of Jim’s life and his contributions to the City of Salem will be held on Saturday, February 1, 2003 at 11 am at the Salem YMCA.
