Obituary

Vincent J. Fontano, a long-time Somerville resident, died Thursday at the Neville Center in Cambridge. He was 86.

Mr. Fontano was born and raised in Boston’s North End, the son of the late Joseph and the late Josephine (Baglio) Fontana. A combat veteran of World War II Vincent served with the Army in the Pacific Theatre and helped in the liberation of the Philippines. Upon return to civilian life Vincent worked as a presser for Sal’s Cleaners and attended Bentley College. He enjoyed a long career with the post office, retiring from South Postal Annex. A dedicated husband and father, Vincent enjoyed the company of his family and friends. He was also an enthusiast of horse racing and had many enjoyable days at Suffolk Downs.


He was the beloved husband of the late Jo-Ann “Jenny” (Campagna). He was a loving father of Orsola “Susan” Fontano and Jo-Ann “Jr.“ Fontano, both of Somerville and Francis Tansino of Hudson. He was a dear brother of Rosario Fontana and Josephine Della Pelle both of Medford, Joseph Fontana of Melrose, Rose Villanucci of Medford and the late Nunzio and Rocco Fontana. He is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews.

His funeral will be from the Dello Russo Funeral Home, 306 Main St. Medford, on Monday, December 24, at 9 AM, followed by a funeral mass celebrated in St. Benedict Church, Hathorn St. Somerville at 10 AM. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. and may visit with the family Saturday 7 – 9 and Sunday 2 – 4 and 7 – 9. Services will conclude with burial at Oak Grove Cemetery, Medford.
