Mr. Anthony J. Umbro Jr, of Medford formerly of Somerville died on Sunday in the Melrose Wakefield Hospital following a brief illness. He is the husband of the late Alvera (Zona) Umbro.
Born in Boston, son of the late Anthony and Elizabeth (DePalma) Umbro, he attended local schools. A gifted athlete, in earlier years he played semi-professional baseball for the Carolina Pelicans during the 1939-1940 seasons. He later joined the United States Navy and served during WWII as a Gunner’s Mate 2nd Class. Assigned to the U.S.S. Vincennes where he was involved in many skirmishes and was on board during which time an attack caused it’s sinking.
Mr. Umbro later worked for over 30 years in the former Charlestown Navy Yard as a gun machinist. He is a life member of V.F.W Post #680 of Somerville, member of the Medford Senior Citizens and a former member of the Somerville Redevelopment Authority. He enjoyed reading and writing and is considered quite the humorist.
He leaves a daughter Lynda Umbro of Melrose, a son Steven Umbro and his wife Paula of OK. Loving grandfather of Steven, Adam and Drew. Dear brother of Elizabeth Cavallaro of Lynnfield, Camille Tuttavilla of East Boston, Marilyn Bruno of Revere, Richard Umbro of Malden and the late Rocco and Lorraine Umbro. Funeral from Dello Russo Funeral Home, 306 Main St., MEDFORD Thursday 9 am followed by a funeral mass celebrated in St. Raphael Church, 512 High Street, Medford, at 10 am. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours Wednesday 4 thru 8.
