Obituary

Thurston Fuller Ackerman of Medford, beloved husband of Margaret (Albo) Ackerman, died at the Lawrence Memorial Hospital in Medford on November 18, 2007. He was 87 years old.
He was born on March 22, 1920, in Boston, Massachusetts and was a beloved son of the late Thurston Fuller, Sr. and Margaret (Myers) Ackerman. Mr. Ackerman was a graduate of Medford High School, class of 1939 and a graduate of Hillyer College in Hartford, Connecticut. Mr. Ackerman entered the U. S. Army on July 20, 1942, at Ft. Devens, Massachusetts, and served as Tech. Sgt. During World War II in the Aleutian Islands and in New Guinea. While serving in the Army, Mr. Ackerman worked as a Radio Repaiman and was a qualified Sharpshooter. After receiving his honorable discharge on December 2, 1945, from Fort Devens, he was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, Victory Medal, Asiatic Pacific Theater Campaign Ribbon and the American Campaign Ribbon. Mr. Ackerman then worked for GE for more than 34 years.
He was a lifelong member of the North Street Union Congregational Church of Medford and served as teacher and superintendent of the Sunday School and was a long time member of the Diaconate Board, Clerk and served as Moderator and a member of many other committees of the church that is now known as the North Prospect Union United Church of Christ. He was also the former assistant of Scoutmaster Troop 6 in Medford and Scoutmaster of Troop 1 in Springfield. Mr. Ackerman was Past Master of the Brookline Masonic Lodge, a member of the Aleppo Shriners Temple and member of the Board of Directors of AARP Chapter #1132 of Medford. He was also a licensed amateur radio operator and computer enthusiast as well as a member of the Arlington Seniors Computer Club.
Besides his beloved wife, Margaret, of more than 65 years, he will be sorely missed by his loving children; Robert A. Ackerman of Annapolis, MD., Karl B. Ackerman of Medford and Susan L. Ackerman of New York City, cherished grandchildren; Jared E. Ackerman of Medford, Rebecca A. Ackerman of Boston and Michael D. Ackerman of Cambridge, and devoted brother; Robert Arthur Ackerman and dear nephews Eric Ackerman and Konrad Ackerman of Washington, DC.
His funeral service was celebrated in the North Prospect Union United Church of Christ, 144 North Street, Medford, Monday, November 26, 2007, at 11 AM. Visitation was Monday, prior to the service, in the Church, from 10 to 11 AM. Interment was private.
